How does a desktop vacuum former work? These machines use heat and vacuum suction to mold a variety of materials and plastic sheets into specific shapes depending on what you use for a mold form. The process begins with the desktop vacuum former heating a plastic sheet material until it becomes pliable and flexible. This is typically done using an heating element that is built into the machine itself. The plastic sheet is then placed over a mold, which is the shape that the plastic needs to take.

You can use organic shapes like walnuts, sea shells or other natural objects as well as existing man-made objects like bowls and cups to create molds. Pairing a 3D printer with a desktop vacuum former opens up a whole new world of possibilities for shapes and molds that can be created.

Once the plastic sheet material is heated and placed over the form for the mold, the vacuum former applies suction which pulls the plastic down around the mold. The vacuum ensures that the plastic forms to the shape of the mold, even capturing small and fine details.

After the plastic cools and hardens, it then retains the shape of the mold which creates a lightweight and durable piece that can be used on it's own or as a mold for things like candles, soaps, chocolates and much more.

This process can be repeated multiple times with the same mold, allowing for the production of multiple identical pieces.
