Overview

Introducing the Ultimaker S3

The UltiMaker S3 3D printer takes many of the best features from the UltiMaker S5 and combines them into a smaller, more budget-friendly device. The UltiMaker S3 delivers the same high-quality, composite-ready dual extrusion, with the same market-leading reliability and ease of use – just with a smaller build volume (230 x 190 x 200 mm or 9.1 x 7.4 x 7.9 inches).

Key features include:

  • Network connectivity: Print via Wi-Fi, LAN, cloud, or with USB
  • Touch screen: Effortless operation via an award-winning user interface
  • Advanced active leveling: Reliable first-layer adhesion, enables unattended use
  • Front enclosure: Improved printing environment for better print results
  • Flow sensor: Stay informed when filament runs out to increase print success
  • Easy setup and monitoring: With NFC material recognition and internal camera
  • Composite materials compatible: Print parts with high strength and unique properties

Exceptional Engineering

From the ground up, the Ultimaker S3 has been meticulously crafted to live up to the renowned print quality associated with Ultimaker's S-line of 3D printers. Inside the Ultimaker S3, you'll discover a host of exceptional features:

  • Reinforced feeder wheels crafted from coated, hardened steel empower abrasion-resistant 3D printing, allowing you to create high-strength parts with glass or carbon fiber composites when paired with the Ultimaker print core CC Red.
  • Dual filament flow sensors enhance your print success rate by detecting filament depletion and immediately pause your print, notifying you to replace the spool, ensuring uninterrupted printing.
  • Advanced active leveling that ensures easy and reliable first-layer adhesion. The Ultimaker S3 employs precise build area probing and Z-height build plate compensation at the start of each print job, allowing you to initiate printing and focus on your tasks.
  • High-accuracy stepper drivers taken directly from the Ultimaker S5. These high-precision drivers are quieter than the Ultimaker 3 and run more reliably to consistently provide high-quality prints.

Additional Great Features

The Ultimaker S3 impressively crams an array of features into its compact form, offering a powerhouse of 3D printing capabilities in a remarkably small footprint:

  • Rigid printer frame reduces small vibrations (or ringing) while printing to improve overall print quality
  • Single glass door with a magnetic latch provides a more controlled build environment and reduces the risk of warping or delamination
  • Optimized internal design allowing both dual extrusion nozzles to reach the whole build area, and maintaining a high build-volume-to-size ratio
  • Internal power supply removes the need to make space for a power brick. It also makes the setup process easy across all S-line 3D printers

Unlimited Material Possibilities

Minimize time spent configuring your print jobs by leveraging Ultimaker's integrated materials. The Ultimaker S3 automatically detects Ultimaker NFC-enabled filament. And combined with Ultimaker Cura's material profiles, your print jobs are automatically loaded with optimized settings specific to your selected filament.

There's a wide range of Ultimaker-brand materials to choose from: Tough PLA, PLA, Nylon, ABS, CPE, CPE+, Polycarbonate, TPU 95A, Polypropylene, PVA, and Breakaway. Additionally, as with any Ultimaker 3D printer, you’re free to use any brand and type of material you wish. The Ultimaker S3 can handle any 2.85mm materials that extrude up to 280C.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Size Filament Does the UltiMaker S3 Use?

The UltiMaker S3 uses 2.85mm (often referred to as 3mm) filament diameter. This is the standard filament size for all brand UltiMaker 3D printers. Always ensure you're using the correct filament diameter for your printer to prevent issues during printing.

How Many Print Cores Does the UltiMaker S3 Have?

The UltiMaker S3 uses swappable print cores, which are very easy to change. These print cores are available in different configurations as follows:

  • AA print cores (used for all non-abrasive build materials)
    • These print cores have standard brass nozzles, designed for non-abrasive materials like PLA, PETG, Nylon, PC, etc.
    • Available with 0.25mm, 0.4mm, or 0.8mm nozzles
  • BB print cores (used for PVA water-soluble support material)
    • The BB print cores are used only for the PVA water-soluble support material
    • Available with 0.4mm or 0.8mm nozzles
  • CC print cores (used for abrasive materials)
    • The CC print cores have hardened steel nozzles, suitable for printing abrasive materials like carbon fiber or glass fiber filled filaments
    • Available with 0.4mm or 0.6mm nozzles
The UltiMaker S3 printer includes two of the AA 0.4mm print cores and one BB 0.4mm print core. This means you have everything you need to start printing, either for two-color printing (using two AA print cores) or using a build material with water-soluble PVA supports (using one AA and one BB print core).

You can purchase additional print cores as needed. The 0.8mm print cores will allow you to significantly increase your print speeds. And the CC print cores will enable you to print those abrasive materials you plan to use.

Can the UltiMaker S3 Print All of the UltiMaker Marketplace Materials?

The UltiMaker S3 can print all of UltiMaker's materials and many from the Marketplace. However, some third-party materials may need specific settings or print cores. Always check material specifications and use recommended settings from the UltiMaker Marketplace or the material manufacturer.

Can I Use Third-Party Slicing Software with the UltiMaker S3?

While UltiMaker S3 is optimized for use with UltiMaker Cura slicing software, it is compatible with other slicing software options. However, for the best user experience and print quality, using UltiMaker Cura is recommended.
