Each lesson in this beginners lesson pack designed to last approximately one hour. All of the lesson content is fully editable by the teacher. Every worksheet and homework sheets come with answer sheets so students can self assess or peer assess their work, reducing teacher workload and involving the students fully in assessment for learning.

As part of the beginners lessons there are 7 TinkerCAD modelling challenges for students to complete including the free tutorial in lesson 1. By the end of the course they will be confident in the use of basic CAD modelling and be able to create files for 3D printing. Included in the lesson content is step by step tutorials for how to create models and also video tutorials on how to use TinkerCAD (free to use and browser based, so no download of software is needed).

The beginners lesson pack has a nice blend of CAD Modelling Challenges and theory work, teaching students about the technology of 3D printing and the principles behind how they work.

By the end of this beginners lesson series all students will be able to;

  • Recognise what a 3D printer looks like
  • Describe where 3D printers are used in society
  • Discuss why 3D printers are being widely adopted in society
  • Explain the basic concept of how a 3D printer works
  • Explain how x,y and z co-ordinates relate to 3D printing
  • Describe the main components of how to create a 3D printed object
  • Define the term CAD (computer aided design)
  • Define the term CAM (computer aided manufacture)
  • Create a basic model using free to use CAD software (TinkerCAD)
  • Add fillets and chamfers to models
  • Download their models as an STL file

Most students will be able to;

  • Explain the benefits of using a 3D printer to make products
  • Identify potential issues with 3D printing materials
  • Design a basic model to scale with given measurements
  • Modify sizes of a CAD model
  • Flip and duplicate features
  • Slice an STL file using slicing software

Get the Quality Filament You Need

Nothing will impact your 3D printing results like the kind of filament you use. Good filament is highly consistent in diameter, is wound evenly onto the spool with just the right amount of tension, and will not tangle when being unwound. 3D Universe offers a wide range of high-quality filaments to choose from.
