To meet the immediate needs of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Buffalo NY community has joined forces with the international e-NABLE movement to create reusable open source emergency personal protection equipment. We hope to accelerate universal adoption of masks during public health emergencies.
The vacuum formed BEclear mask system is a lightweight reusable clear mask adapter combined with a certified face mask.
In 2020, when the COVID pandemic was in full swing and there were critical shortages of PPE, a group of volunteers from the Rochester, NY academic community teamed up with members of the e-NABLE Volunteer Community to explore options for mask solutions that could be produced using digital fabrication technologies.
Over the course of the next year and over 150 meetings and online work sessions, this team has created several mask designs using different production methods. Our hope is that when the next mask shortage occurs, there will be more options available for those who may want to make their own.
The BEclear Mask team has documented our work carefully in order to enable others to build off of our work.
To learn more about the process of developing this mask and other mask designs we have worked on, please refer to our dedicated BE Mask website and follow us on our social media channels!
The BEclear Mask was developed through a volunteer collaboration between members of the Buffalo, NY community and the international e-NABLE volunteer community.
With masks being a part of the day-to-day reality for much of the world, it has become apparent that having the lower half of one's face covered causes difficulties for communication. The ability to see a person's expression is an important part of how we connect with one another, and opaque masks interfere with that.
One community that has been impacted especially significantly by this has been the hearing impaired. Having to rely on lip-reading creates extra challenges when those around you are wearing masks that hide their mouths.
The BEclear Mask was developed to address these challenges.
Key Features:
The BEclear Mask incorporates a certified KF94 mask for filtration. Due to the manner in which the KF94 mask is attached to the BEclear adapter, it provides a better seal on the face compared to wearing a standard surgical mask or cloth mask.
Detailed specifications for the included KF94 mask can be found here. FDA approval information can be found here.
In developing the BEclear Mask, our team leveraged the latest digital fabrication technologies for prototyping and testing. The forms used for the vacuum forming were created using 3D printers, and the vacuum forming was done using the Mayku FormBox, an affordable and easy-to-use desktop vacuum former.
To prevent your BEclear Mask from fogging up, you can apply a thin layer of dish-soap to the inner surface. Or, if you want improved fog protection, you could get yourself a pack of Nerdwax Fog Block. Each BEclear Mask purchased will have some Fog Block pre-applied, but you might want to have some more on hand for later.

Nothing will impact your 3D printing results like the kind of filament you use. Good filament is highly consistent in diameter, is wound evenly onto the spool with just the right amount of tension, and will not tangle when being unwound. 3D Universe offers a wide range of high-quality filaments to choose from. We provide a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all filament we sell. If you have any problems, just send back the unused portion of the spool for a full refund. Check out our filament collection...
