The LC40 is capable of engraving anodized aluminum. Otherwise, the LC40 is not capable of cutting or engraving metal, and Dremel strongly urges people to avoid attempting to do so, as it would present a significant safety risk.

The Dremel LC40’s external footprint is 32 x 20 x 8.25 inches, making it suitable for most offices or workspaces. The actual cutting area is a substantial 20 x 12 inches (508 mm x 304.8 mm), and with its 40 watt CO2 laser, the cutting depth is up to ¼ inch / 6 mm deep for wood or acrylic. The unit has a rugged exterior, weighing-in at roughly 70 lbs.
Dremel has gone to great lengths to ensure their LC40 meets the strictest safety standards. Not only has the LC40 been drop-tested, it’s the only UL-certified desktop laser cutter you’ll find at its price point. This qualification alone makes the LC40 an excellent fit for schools and libraries.
The Dremel LC40 is protected by an array of built-in SMART sensors that proactively scan for hazardous scenarios and provide troubleshooting guidance. Combined with the LC40’s built-in venting system, the optional BOFA air filtration unit ensures each unit’s operating environment remains safe, and free of noxious fumes or airborne particulate matter.
Both the LC40’s hardware and software appear to be robust and well-designed, as one would expect for an item with a $6,000 price tag. The exclusive Dremel DigiLab Suite includes out-of-the-box tutorials to make set up quick and painless. The LC40’s browser-based software is hosted from the unit itself and works through Wifi or Ethernet on Windows, Mac and Linux.
The process of positioning graphics over materials is straightforward and intuitive. Using the LC40’s onboard camera, the software allows users to position their graphic over a live view of the chamber - it’s truly a point and click experience. Selecting materials is easy, as the LC40 comes loaded with numerous material profiles. The LC40 also has a built-in 7-inch LCD display for monitoring and managing jobs.
Keeping the LC40 running promises to be easy, as the 40 watt laser can be swapped out with minimal effort or technical know-how.
